May Featured Safety Tip -

All I need to know I learned from my 10 foot tape measure…..

Well, not exactly all you need to know. But a quick demonstration with your tape measure can reinforce some key “trigger” numbers in construction safety.

2 inches Definition of a hole; 2 inches or greater in diameter requires protection
19 inches A change in elevation 19 inches or greater requires a ramp or step to gain access
21 inches Height of the mid-rail of a guardrail
42 inches - Height of the top rail of a guard rail
4 feet - Height where you need to provide egress from an excavation
5 feet - Height where you need to begin sloping/shoring an excavation
6 feet - Maximum free fall distance allowed
10 feet - Height on a scaffold where you must provide guardrail or wear PFAS

Safety.. Why I Care!
Fourth Annual Take A Stand Day - Aug 7

MIOSHA will dedicate more than 125 professional staff to work cooperatively with employers to address specific workplace safety and health issues on "Take a Stand Day," August 7, 2008. Sign Up Now!

GREAT LAKES SAFETY TRAINING CENTER’S OFFER

We would encourage you to take part in MIOSHA’s program to help develop a working relationship with the administration.

However, if you sign up with MIOSHA and they are not able to accommodate your request, Great Lakes will provide one or two member companies with a site “inspection” or assistance with a safety concern that you haven’t had time to tackle. Submit your request to MIOSHA – and let GLSTC know that you have. If you are not chosen to participate in MIOSHA’s “Take A Stand”, then GLSTC will work with you!

Another great way to participate in this day is to utilize your own employees and create an in-house “Take A Stand”. Have different crews perform a pre-task for someone else’s job, create an observation team for the day, host a safety suggestion day tied to an incentive (dinner for two…), or any other way to emphasize a difference in the safety of that day; August 7th. Let us know of your successes!
